LARPing stands for Live Action Role Playing. It is an interactive theater experience that allows participants to physically portray their characters in a fictional setting, improvising their characters' speech and movements somewhat like actors in improvisational theater. LARPing is a community art that allows participants to plunge themselves into a different world, with a skilled staff and an array of costuming, props, and scenography, an everyday setting becomes the backdrop for an amazing experience. LARPing is always group-based and may range from a few individuals to hundreds of people participating in an event. Larps can vary in participant size and duration, and the themes can be from realistic modern or historical settings to fantastic and futuristic eras. Production values are sometimes minimal other times over the top with elaborate venues, props, and costumes. The focus of LARP is often on conflict and conflict resolution, and common themes include combat, historical re-enactments, and simulations with rules similar to combat. LARPing often brings more physical exercise and social interaction than conventional and electronic gaming, including augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) gaming.
