A ledge is a narrow, flat surface that projects out from a vertical surface, such as a wall or a cliff. It can be a raised or projecting edge or molding intended to protect or check a window ledge, or an underwater ridge or reef near the shore. A ledge can also refer to a relatively narrow, projecting part, such as a horizontal, shelf-like projection on a wall or a raised edge on a tray. In the context of a cliff or mountain, a ledge is a piece of rock that is in the shape of a narrow shelf. Examples of ledges include birds perched on the ledge of a building, a ledge on the side of a mountain, and seabirds nesting on rocky ledges.
