Liquid propane (LP) is a fuel gas that is commonly used for space and water heating, cooking, and as fuel for engine applications such as forklifts, farm irrigation engines, fleet vehicles, and buses. LP is a flammable hydrocarbon gas made from propane, butane, and small amounts of other hydrocarbons like propylene and butylene. LP gas is stored in metal canisters and is used in its liquid form at or below its boiling point (-44°F) as well as when it is stored under pressure. When LP is stored in a tank, it is put under pressure, and in that pressurized state, it turns into a liquid. When the valve on an LP tank is opened to use the grill, the liquid propane is actually boiling back into propane gas, which is then sent into the grill through the hose/regulator. LP is heavier than air, unlike natural gas, and thus will flow along.
