Lisinopril is a medication used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) and heart failure. It is also prescribed after a heart attack to help prevent future strokes and heart attacks and to improve survival. Lisinopril works by widening blood vessels, making it easier for the heart to pump blood around the body. It can also be used to slow down diabetic kidney disease. Lisinopril is available as tablets and liquid, and it is only available on prescription. It is usually taken once a day, with or without food, as directed by a doctor. The first dose of lisinopril may cause dizziness, so it is recommended to take it at bedtime. Lisinopril is also available in combination with another blood pressure medicine called hydrochlorothiazide.
