Or a smart home app might need to scan the network to find all the compatible devices connected in the home.
Apps that access the local network can collect information about nearby devices to determine which networks users join and when. Therefore, it is important to be cautious when granting apps local network permission. Users can enable or disable Local Network Access for each app in the Privacy & Security settings. If users are not sure why an app needs access, it is recommended to keep the gate locked and not grant access.
In iOS 14 or later and iPadOS 14 or later, any app that wants to interact with devices on the network must ask for permission the first time it tries to browse the local network. Until permission is granted, all local network communication is blocked. If users don’t want to allow access, or if it’s not clear why the app needs access, they can tap "Don’t Allow". The app can still use the internet or interact with the local network using a system service, like AirPrint, AirPlay, AirDrop, or HomeKit.
