Lotion is a low-viscosity topical preparation intended for application to the skin. It is a liquid cosmetic that is usually used to soothe or soften the skin, especially that of the face or hands. Lotions are applied to the external skin with bare hands, a brush, a clean cloth, or cotton wool. Unlike creams, lotions have a higher water content and are less greasy. They are considered lightweight and easily absorbed by the skin. Lotions are used to maintain skins hydration levels by locking in the moisture, keeping the skin healthy, soft, and supple. They can reduce skin dryness and flaky spots, slow down aging signs, and fight against acne. Lotions can be used as a medicine delivery system, but many lotions, especially hand lotions and body lotions, are meant instead to simply smooth, moisturize, soften and, sometimes, perfume the skin.
