LP gas stands for "Liquefied Petroleum Gas" and is a fuel gas that contains a flammable mixture of hydrocarbon gases, specifically propane, propylene, butylene, isobutane, and n-butane. LP gas is made from propane, butane, and small amounts of other hydrocarbons like propylene and butylene, which are extracted from natural gas streams as they emerge from the ground. LP gas is used as a fuel gas in heating appliances, cooking equipment, and vehicles. It is also used as an aerosol propellant and a refrigerant, replacing chlorofluorocarbons in an effort to reduce damage to the ozone layer. LP gas is heavier than air, unlike natural gas, and thus will flow along the ground and can collect in low areas such as basements. When specifically used as a vehicle fuel, it is often referred to as autogas or just gas. Varieties of LP gas that are bought and sold include mixes that are mostly propane or mostly butane.
