Lungo coffee is a type of espresso that is made by using an espresso machine to make a short black (a single espresso shot) with more water (generally twice as much) resulting in a larger coffee. The word "lungo" means "long" in Italian, referring to the longer extraction time and the volume of the finished drink. A lungo requires a longer extraction time than an espresso and produces a coffee drink that’s about the same size as a double espresso, typically two ounces or 60ml. Lungo coffee uses more water and a longer extraction time than an espresso, which gives a less punchy drink that’s double the size of an espresso. Lungo coffee is less intense in flavor than an espresso, but it has a slightly higher caffeine level due to the extra time the water spends in contact with the coffee grounds. Lungo coffee should not be mistaken for a caffè americano (an espresso with hot water added to it) or a long black (hot water with a short black added to it, which is the inverse order to an Americano and done to preserve the crema).
