Maki sushi is a type of sushi that consists of vinegared rice and various fillings, such as fish, vegetables, or eggs, rolled together inside a sheet of seaweed (nori). The roll is created by spreading sushi rice on the seaweed, adding the fillings on top, then rolling it up tightly using a bamboo mat called a makisu. The rolled sushi is then sliced into bite-sized pieces before serving. Maki sushi comes in different sizes and forms, including:
- Hosomaki: small, thin rolls with usually a single filling.
 - Futomaki: large, thick rolls with multiple fillings.
 - Uramaki: inside-out rolls where the rice is on the outside, and the seaweed wraps the fillings inside.
 - Temaki: cone-shaped hand rolls.
 
Maki sushi is one of the most recognized and popular forms of sushi, especially outside Japan, where it is often what people picture when they think of sushi. It is versatile, can include a wide variety of ingredients, and is commonly served with soy sauce, wasabi, and pickled ginger. It originated in Japan about 300 years ago and has evolved to include creative designs and styles.
