Mannesmann was a German industrial conglomerate that was originally established as a manufacturer of steel pipes in 1890 under the name "Deutsch-Österreichische Mannesmannröhren-Werke AG". In the twentieth century, Mannesmanns product range grew and the company expanded into numerous sectors, including various steel products, mechanical and electrical engineering, automotive, and telecommunications. The company was a leading German telecom provider, and its D2 unit operated the countrys largest mobile phone service. The "Mannesmann process" was a combination of pilger-rolling and pierce-rolling that became known throughout the world and unlocked new potential in steel tube production. Today, the Mannesmann brand lives on in the steel industry, particularly in the steel tube and pipe industry, as the German steel manufacturer Salzgitter AG bought the pipe production division of Mannesmannröhren-Werke AG (today Mannesmannröhren-Werke GmbH), as well as the Mannesmann brand. Mannesmann Stainless Tubes is one of the leading global manufacturers of seamless stainless steel and nickel-based alloy tubes and pipes.
