Material is a substance or mixture of substances that constitutes an object. It can be pure or impure, living or non-living matter, and can be classified based on its physical and chemical properties, geological origin, or biological function. Materials science is the study of materials, their properties, and their applications. Raw materials can be processed in different ways to influence their properties, by purification, shaping, or the introduction of other materials. New materials can be produced from raw materials by synthesis. In industry, materials are inputs to manufacturing processes to produce products or more complex materials.
The term "material" can also be used as an adjective to describe something that is relevant or important. For example, "the researchers included all data that was material". It can also refer to a performers repertoire or a persons potential suitability for a pursuit. Additionally, "material" can refer to a physical substance that things can be made from, such as paper, plastic, or other materials. It can also refer to information used when writing something, or equipment needed for a particular activity.
