Metacam is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used to relieve pain, inflammation, and fever in dogs, cats, cattle, pigs, horses, and guinea pigs. It is used to reduce post-operative pain and inflammation following orthopedic and soft tissue surgery in dogs and cats, and to alleviate inflammation and pain in both acute and chronic musculo-skeletal disorders in dogs. In cattle, Metacam is used together with antibiotics to reduce clinical signs such as fever and inflammation in acute respiratory infection, and in pigs, it is used in non-infectious locomotor disorders to reduce lameness and inflammation, relieve post-operative pain associated with minor soft tissue surgery such as castration, and for supportive therapy together with antibiotics in the treatment of diseases that occur after farrowing such as puerperal septicaemia and toxaemia. Metacam is available as an oral suspension, a solution for injection, and chewable tablets. It is important to note that Metacam, like other drugs of its class, is not free from adverse reactions, and owners should be advised of the potential for adverse reactions and be informed of the clinical signs associated with drug intolerance.
