Microdosing is a technique for studying the behavior of drugs in humans through the administration of doses so low they are unlikely to produce whole-body effects, but high enough to allow the cellular response to be studied. Microdosing can also refer to precise dispensing of small amounts of a drug substance for a drug product. However, the term "microdosing" is most commonly used to refer to the practice of consuming very low, sub-hallucinogenic doses of a psychedelic substance, such as LSD or psilocybin-containing mushrooms. This practice has grown in popularity, with some people claiming that it enhances mood, creativity, concentration, productivity, and empathy. However, there is very little evidence supporting these purported effects as of 2023. Some studies indicate a very real and significant benefit from microdosing, whereas others are much less convincing and show little to no benefit. It is important to note that microdosing with psychedelics is illegal in many countries, and the drugs are unregulated, meaning that the dosage and potency of the substance cannot always be guaranteed.
