Minot Air Force Base (AFB) is a United States Air Force installation located in Ward County, North Dakota, 13 miles north of the city of Minot via U.S. Route 83. It is the home of two major wings: the 5th Bomb Wing and 91st Missile Wing, both of the Air Force Global Strike Command (AFGSC) . Minot AFB is the only dual-wing nuclear-capable base in the Air Force, hosting two legs of the Strategic Triad. The base is an integral part of all the branches of the military and is known for its strategic bomber units, bomber refueling, and early radar warning of attack. The base was initially opened in 1957 as an Air Defense Command (ADC) base and became a major Strategic Air Command (SAC) base in the early 1960s, with both nuclear-armed intercontinental ballistic missiles and manned bombers and aerial refueling aircraft. Today, Minot AFB is a vital part of the United States nuclear deterrence strategy.
