Mirtazapine is primarily used to treat major depressive disorder (depression). Additionally, it is often prescribed off-label for other conditions such as insomnia, panic disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), obsessive- compulsive disorder (OCD), generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder, headaches, and migraines. It is also used for patients with depression who have insomnia or low body weight. Mirtazapine works as an atypical antidepressant by increasing the release of serotonin and norepinephrine in the brain, helping improve mood and anxiety symptoms. It can also have sedative and appetite-stimulating effects, which explains its use in some other off-label conditions.
