In mathematics, the mode is a measure of central tendency in a set of data. It refers to the value that appears most frequently in the data set. The mode is useful when there are a lot of repeated values in a dataset, and it is most commonly used for categorical data, such as models of cars or flavors of soda, for which a mathematical average median value based on ordering cannot be calculated
. A data set can have no mode, one mode, or multiple modes. If there are multiple numbers that occur with equal frequency and more times than the others in the set, the data set is considered to be "multimodal" or "bimodal" if there are two modes
. Unlike the mean and median, the concept of mode also makes sense for "nominal data," not consisting of numerical values in the case of mean, or even of ordered values in the case of median
