MOF stands for Metal-Organic Framework. It is a class of compounds consisting of metal clusters coordinated to organic ligands to form one-, two-, or three-dimensional structures. MOFs are organic-inorganic hybrid crystalline porous materials that have an extraordinarily large internal surface area. They are defined by their three-dimensional frameworks generated by the interaction of metal cores and organic linkers. MOFs offer great potential for their effective integration and exploration in various sensing applications. Researchers can create materials that selectively absorb specific gases into tailor-made pockets within the structure by making the MOF from different metal atoms and organic linkers. MOFs can be put together arbitrarily like Lego bricks and outperform every previously known class of material in terms of flexibility. MOFs have become a rapidly growing research field, and more than 90,000 different MOF structures have been reported so far.
