Monogamy is a relationship structure between two people that is romantically and sexually exclusive, meaning that they dont engage in this type of relationship with anyone else. Monogamous relationships can be defined clinically as having one partner for life, but culturally, it is defined as sexual and emotional exclusivity and only being with one partner at a time. Monogamy can be seen as a way of forming romantic relationships with only one partner at a time, as opposed to having multiple partners at once. Monogamy is the most mainstream approach to relationships across many societies, though its by no means universal. In the United States, the government and all 50 states require that marriages be monogamous. Monogamy can be contrasted with non-monogamy, which means no exclusivity, emotionally and/or sexually, in a relationship.
