Magnetic Resonance Cholangiopancreatography (MRCP) is a non-invasive imaging test that uses magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to examine the pancreatic and biliary (bile duct) systems. The test uses a contrast agent, which is a dye infused into the veins through an intravenous (IV) line, to produce clearer images of the organs and the tubes that connect them. MRCP can diagnose various conditions such as bile duct cancer, bile duct stones or cysts, blocked or narrowed bile duct (biliary stricture), blocked, narrowed or dilated pancreatic ducts, dilated bile ducts, gallstones, inflammation in the pancreas (pancreatitis) or gallbladder. MRCP is a specialized type of contrast MRI that helps healthcare providers diagnose these conditions. MRCP is a non-invasive test that does not use ionizing radiation. It is important to inform the healthcare provider about any health problems, recent surgeries, allergies, and whether there is a possibility of pregnancy. MRCP is not available in all hospitals, and patients may have to travel to a specialist center to have the test.
