MS-DOS (Microsoft Disk Operating System) is an operating system for x86-based personal computers mostly developed by Microsoft. It was first released in 1981 and was designed to run on PC compatible computers. MS-DOS was the main operating system for IBM PC compatibles during the 1980s, from which point it was gradually superseded by operating systems offering a graphical user interface (GUI), in various generations of the graphical Microsoft Windows operating system. MS-DOS is a non-graphical, line-oriented, command-driven OS, meaning that it is a text-based operating system that does not have any graphical user interface. It has a relatively simple but not overly friendly user interface, and its prompt to enter an MS-DOS command looks like this: C:> . MS-DOS commands are default functions included in the OS, and there are mainly two types of MS-DOS commands: internal commands and external commands. MS-DOS is not case-sensitive, so commands can be typed in either uppercase or lowercase. MS-DOS is still used in embedded x86 systems due to its simple architecture and minimal memory.
