MTB subject stands for Mother Tongue-Based subject. It is a part of the Mother Tongue-Based Multilingual Education (MTB-MLE) approach, which aims to improve the teaching and learning process by using students mother tongue as the primary language of instruction in the early years of education. The MTB-MLE approach has been implemented in various countries, including Myanmar, to strengthen teaching and learning in both the mother tongue and second language subjects, such as English.
In MTB-MLE programs, students begin their formal education by using their own language and culture as the foundation for learning in school. This approach has been found to produce students who are multilingual, multicultural, and better able to contribute to their community's and their nation's development goals. The use of the mother tongue in the early years of education also helps to strengthen the language skills of students, leading to better overall language proficiency.
