Mucus is mostly made of water, with a mix of glycoproteins, proteins, sugars, and other molecules that help the body control harmful germs. The fluid component of mucus is around 95% water, with mucin secretions from goblet cells and submucosal glands making up 2-3% glycoproteins, proteoglycans (0.1–0.5%), lipids (0.3–0.5%), proteins, and DNA. The major mucins secreted, MUC5AC and MUC5B, are large polymers that give mucus its rheologic or viscoelastic properties. Mucus is continuously produced in the respiratory tract and serves as a protective and lubricating substance for various organs in the body.
