Multipurpose River Valley Projects (MRVPs) are large dams constructed across rivers to serve various purposes in addition to impounding the water of a river. These projects are planned for various purposes like irrigation, hydropower generation, water supply for drinking and industrial use, flood control, navigation, and fish breeding. The main objectives of MRVPs are:
-
Irrigation: MRVPs are primarily intended to develop irrigation for agriculture by providing water to the fields through canals.
-
Hydropower Generation: MRVPs generate electricity through the building of hydroelectric power plants.
-
Water Supply: MRVPs provide water for drinking and industrial use.
-
Flood Control: MRVPs help in controlling floods by regulating the flow of water in the river.
-
Navigation: MRVPs help in improving navigation by making the river navigable.
-
Fish Breeding: MRVPs help in fish breeding by providing a suitable environment for fish to breed.
Some examples of MRVPs in India are the Bhakra Nangal Project, Damodar Valley Project, Hirakud Dam Project, and Tungabhadra Project.
