NANDA International is a professional organization of nurses interested in standardized nursing terminology. It was officially founded in 1982 and develops, researches, disseminates and refines the nomenclature, criteria, and taxonomy of nursing diagnoses. Prior to the year 2002, "NANDA" was an acronym for the North American Nursing Diagnosis Association, but that is no longer the name of the organization. In 2002, it officially became NANDA International, in consideration of the significant growth of its membership outside North America. The correct name of the organization is NANDA International, Inc. . The organization contributes to patient safety through the integration of evidence-based terminology into clinical practice and clinical decision-making. It funds research through the NANDA-I Foundation and is a supportive and energetic global network of nurses committed to improving the quality of nursing care and improvement of patient safety through evidence-based practice.
