The Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps (NROTC) program is a college-based, commissioned officer training program of the United States Navy and the United States Marine Corps. The program was established in 1926 to produce a reserve of qualified officers who would be needed for a possible rapid expansion of the military in the case of an unforeseen emergency. The purpose of the NROTC program is to educate and train qualified young men and women for service as commissioned officers in the Navys unrestricted line, the Navy Nurse Corps, and the Marine Corps. The program consists of multiple 3 credit hour university-level Naval Science classes ranging from an introduction to Naval Science, Navy/Marine Corps History, navigation, engineering, amphibious warfare, Leadership, and Ethics. Navy Leadership Lab is held every Tuesday for two hours where general military training and field meets are held. Upon graduation, midshipmen are commissioned as officers in the Naval Reserve or Marine Corps Reserve. The NROTC Scholarship Program is highly competitive, and selected applicants are awarded scholarships that cover full tuition, books, fees, and other financial benefits at many of the countrys leading colleges and universities.
