A neuron, also known as a nerve cell, is the fundamental unit of the brain and nervous system. It is a specialized cell designed to transmit information to other nerve cells, muscle, or gland cells. Neurons have three main parts: dendrites, an axon, and a cell body or soma.

  • Dendrites: These are the tree-like branches of a neuron that receive input from other cells. Dendrites branch as they move towards their tips, and they even have leaf-like structures on them called spines. Incoming signals can be either excitatory or inhibitory.

  • Axon: This is the long, thin structure in which action potentials are generated. It is the transmitting part of the neuron. Axons carry efferent signals.

  • Cell body or soma: This is the part of the neuron that contains the nucleus and other organelles necessary for neuronal function. The first two neuronal functions, receiving and processing incoming information, generally take place in the dendrites and cell body.

Neurons vary in size, shape, and structure depending on their role and location. They are classified into three broad types based on function: sensory, motor, and interneurons.

  • Sensory neurons: These neurons help us taste, smell, hear, see, and feel things around us. They are triggered by physical and chemical inputs from our environment.

  • Motor neurons: These neurons transmit information from the brain to the muscles of the body. They are multipolar and are located in the central nervous system extending their axons outside the central nervous system.

  • Interneurons: These neurons help in passing signals between two neurons. They are multipolar in structure and their axons connect only to the nearby sensory and motor neurons.

The important functions of a neuron are to receive signals, integrate incoming signals, and communicate signals to target cells. Neurons generate electrical signals called action potentials, which allow them to quickly transmit information.
