Nissan e-POWER is a unique electric-drive powertrain that integrates a gasoline engine and motor. It is a hybrid vehicle technology that delivers a more responsive, quieter, and efficient way to experience city driving, free from the need to plug in. The e-POWER system is comprised of a high-output battery that is complemented by a variable compression ratio 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbo-charged petrol engine generating 156hp, a power generator, inverter, and 140kW electric motor of similar size and power output as found in Nissans electric vehicles. The electric motor alone drives the wheels, providing instant torque and also has lower tailpipe emissions and running costs compared to a traditional combustion engine, but without the need to plug it in. The petrol engine generates electricity, which can be transmitted via the inverter to the battery pack, the electric motor, or both, according to the driving scenario. The e-POWER system utilizes motor control technology cultivated in past EV development activities, powertrain integration technology, and energy management technology. The system can freely control engine start timing because the engine is not directly connected to the wheels, providing very quiet driving with reduced engine operation time by driving the vehicle with just the motor from start to low/mid-range speed and starting the engine and generating electricity in fast speed areas with elevated road noise.
