The normal perfusion index (PI) range in a pulse oximeter is between 0.02% and 20% . However, there is no agreed-upon standard "normal value" for PI, as it varies depending on patients, physiological conditions, and monitoring sites. PI is a relative number that represents the ratio of pulsatile blood flow to non-pulsatile static blood flow in a patients peripheral tissue. It is an indication of the pulse strength at the sensor site, and a high PI number generally indicates an optimal monitoring site. PI can be used to evaluate the appropriateness of a sensor application site for pulse oximetry and can be an accurate measure/indicator of acute illness in newborn children. PI has also been considered a useful tool for accurately monitoring changes in peripheral perfusion in real-time caused by certain anesthetics.
