NSS stands for National Service Scheme, which is a voluntary program under which young students from colleges, universities, and +2 level work towards creating a campus-community linkage. The scheme was launched in 1969 in India, in the birth centenary year of Mahatma Gandhi, by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports of the Government of India. The primary aim of NSS is to develop the personality of students through community service. NSS volunteers work towards improving peoples living standards, educating them about various issues like health, sanitation, and palliation, and creating awareness about the importance of a clean environment. NSS activities allow students to become confident, develop leadership skills, and learn about different people from different walks of life. NSS helps students to grow individually and as a group, and active volunteers of NSS earn exposure and experience in becoming accomplished social leaders and efficient administrators.
