NuvaRing is a small, flexible vaginal ring used to prevent pregnancy that you insert and remove yourself. It is a form of hormonal birth control that releases a continuous dose of the hormones etonogestrel and ethinyl estradiol into the bloodstream. The ring is inserted into the vagina and left in place for three weeks, then removed for one week before a new ring is inserted. It is just as effective as the pill when used as directed, and you dont have to think about taking it every day. NuvaRing can also be used to safely skip your period if you want to.
It is important to note that NuvaRing is not suitable for everyone. For example, it should not be used by women who smoke cigarettes and are over age 35, as smoking increases the risk of serious heart and blood vessel problems from combination hormonal contraceptives (CHCs) including heart attack, blood clots, or stroke which can be fatal. It is also important to read the Patient Information for NuvaRing, including the information about the increased risk of serious cardiovascular side effects, especially in women who smoke, and discuss it with your health care provider.
