In Ayurveda, Ojas is considered the essence of the Kapha dosha and is an energy reserve that fuels spirituality, mood, sleep, physical strength, and fluids in the body. It is the refined substance produced after digestion, once all seven dhatus—the tissues responsible for the functioning of the systems and organs of the body—are fed and nourished. Ojas is the vital energy that rules our immunity, strength, and happiness, and Ayurveda teaches us how to rebuild it through diet choices. The classical Ayurvedic texts state that it takes 27–30 days to build Ojas, and it is critical to nourish our Ojas supply. Foods that build Ojas are sweet, heavy, unctuous, cool, and smooth, and include avocados, bananas, dates, figs, sweet potatoes, yams, turnips, leafy greens, zucchini, nuts (especially almonds), mung beans, tofu, whole grains, and fresh organic vegetables. Ample sleep, following a daily routine, practicing yoga, meditation, and pranayama, and avoiding stress and overexertion are also recommended to build Ojas.
