Open RN is a project that aims to lower the cost of nursing textbooks through the creation of free Open Educational Resources (OER) textbooks with Creative Commons licensing. The project is led by Chippewa Valley Technical College as part of the Wisconsin Technical College System (WTCS) consortium. The OER textbooks and virtual simulations are collaboratively developed by faculty based on the WTCS State Nursing curriculum and the current NCLEX-RN Test Plan. The Open RN project is funded by a $2.5 million dollar grant from the Department of Education. The projects first book, Nursing Pharmacology, is the winner of the OE Excellence Award. The Open RN textbook series includes the following titles: Nursing Advanced Skills, Nursing Pharmacology, Nursing Fundamentals, Nursing Leadership and Management, Nursing Mental Health, Nursing Care of Children, and Nursing Care of Adults. FlexEd courseware is available for most Open RN titles, which keeps student costs low while providing supplemental content and teaching materials via an integrated online platform.
