Oratory or public speaking is the art or practice of making a speech before an audience. It involves a speaker, an audience, a message, and transmission by voice, articulation, and bodily accompaniments. Oratory is instrumental and practical, as distinguished from poetic or literary composition, which traditionally aims at beauty and pleasure. Oratory is of the marketplace and as such not always concerned with the universal and permanent. The orator in his purpose and technique is primarily persuasive rather than informational or entertaining. Oratorical speeches can include formal speeches such as eulogies, graduation speeches, and inaugural addresses, as well as less formal speeches such as toasts at a wedding or retirement party. Oratory is often considered to be a middle years activity, but public speaking skills can and should be started at a much younger age level. To assist students in choosing their topic, brainstorming and webbing are excellent strategies. If evaluation of Oratory is desired, it should be divided into two parts: content and delivery.
