Otitis media is an infection or inflammation of the middle ear, which is the air-filled space behind the eardrum that contains the tiny vibrating bones of the ear. It can occur as a result of a cold, sore throat, or respiratory infection, and is most common in children. Symptoms of otitis media include ear pain, fever, trouble eating, drinking, or sleeping, and temporary hearing loss. An inflamed, swollen, or red eardrum is a sign of an ear infection. Most middle ear infections clear up within three to five days and don’t need any specific treatment, but sometimes children need antibiotics, pain-relieving medications, or ear tubes.
