Paranoia is an irrational and persistent feeling that people are "out to get you" or that you are the subject of persistent, intrusive attention by others. It is a state of mind in which a person believes that others are trying to harm, deceive, or exploit them. Paranoid thoughts can range from a general feeling of distrust and suspicion of others through to bizarre and complicated beliefs such as conspiracy theories about the government, police, or aliens. People with paranoia may feel like theyre being persecuted or that someone is out to get them. Paranoia can cause constant stress or anxiety related to beliefs they have about others, mistrust of others, feeling disbelieved or misunderstood, feeling victimized or persecuted when there isnt a threat, and isolation. Paranoia is a symptom of some mental health problems but not a diagnosis itself. It can occur with many mental health conditions but is most often present in psychotic disorders. Treatment aims to reduce paranoia and other symptoms and improve the persons ability to function. Treatment can depend on the cause but may include psychotherapy and medication.
