A parcel locker is a lockable unit where mail carriers can leave larger items that won’t fit in a standard mailbox. They are often attached to Cluster Box Mailboxes (CBUs), either alongside them and/or with them. When a mail carrier is unable to fit a package into a standard mailbox slot, they will place the package in a parcel locker. Instead of having to be at home to receive the package, it will be right there waiting in a spacious locker where it won’t get damaged. Customers can access their package by using a key or code provided by the carrier. Parcel lockers are designed to keep parcels safe from theft and unsavory weather. They differ from typically sized mailboxes and will hold packages that wouldn’t fit into mail-type lockers, mailboxes, or PO boxes. USPS owns parcel lockers often combined with other mailbox units within a community mail center, a building’s mailroom, or a mailbox unit cluster. Anyone can purchase parcel lockers, and there are privately owned parcel lockers as well as those owned by postal services.
