Patrick Mahomes tore the ACL in his left knee late in the Chiefs’ Week 15 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers on December 14, 2025. The team has said he is out for the remainder of the season and that he and the organization are exploring surgical options for the torn ACL.
How it happened
The injury occurred in the final minutes of the game when his left knee twisted awkwardly as he was tackled while scrambling, and he had to be helped off the field. An MRI afterward confirmed the ACL tear in the left knee, leading the Chiefs to rule him out and begin planning for surgery and long- term rehab.
What it means for Chiefs
The ACL tear ends Mahomes’ 2025 season and effectively ends the Chiefs’ playoff hopes, as the loss to the Chargers eliminated them from postseason contention. Gardner Minshew is expected to start at quarterback for Kansas City for the remaining games while Mahomes recovers.
