The PED policy in football refers to the rules and regulations regarding the use of performance-enhancing drugs in the sport. In the NFL, the use of steroids, anabolics, and exogenous testosterone is prohibited. The league conducts random or scheduled urine samples to evaluate players for PEDs, and positive cases can result in penalties. The drug testing season closes when the season ends, which means players can be tested at any time up until Super Bowl week. If a player is deemed positive for PEDs, they have the option to appeal the result, but very few players who test positive end up winning the appeal. The NFL also has a policy and program for substances of abuse, which covers anything recreational or non-approved medicinally. The policy involves lists of banned substances, schedules of penalties, and an explanation of the appeal process and further testing procedures. Players are required to inform Drug Free Sport of any change in location, new contact information, or travel if they are in the program.
