PG is an abbreviation for "Parental Guidance". It is a rating system used for movies and TV shows to indicate that some material may not be suitable for children, and parental guidance is advised. The rating system was created by the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) in 1968 as a response to a previous self-censorship system that was created in 1922, known as the Hays Code. The current rating system is voluntary and requires a fee for having material go through the rating process. The rating process is handled by the Classifications and Ratings Administration (CARA) by a rating board that is made up of a group of independent parents that is charged with giving ratings to films that "give parents clear, concise information". The PG rating indicates that all ages may be allowed admission, but parental guidance is suggested. A parent should be present while watching the show to ensure that the content is appropriate and not too scary for their children.
