PLT stands for Platelet Count, which is a blood test that measures the number of platelets in a persons blood. Platelets, also known as thrombocytes, are small blood cells that help the blood clot when there is damage to a blood vessel. They are produced in the bone marrow and circulate within the blood. A platelet count is used to diagnose and monitor conditions that affect platelets, such as bleeding disorders, clotting disorders, and bone marrow problems. The test is performed by taking a blood sample and analyzing it in a laboratory. A normal platelet count ranges from 150,000 to 450,000 platelets per microliter of blood. High or low platelet levels can increase the risk of clotting or excessive bleeding.
