PMP stands for Project Management Professional, which is an internationally recognized professional designation offered by the Project Management Institute (PMI) . PMP certification is an industry-recognized credential for project managers that demonstrates the experience, education, skill, and competency required to lead and direct projects. As of July 2020, there were over 1 million active PMP-certified individuals across 214 countries and territories worldwide.

To obtain PMP certification, individuals must meet certain education and experience criteria and pass a comprehensive exam that tests their ability to manage the people, processes, and business priorities of a professional project. The exam is based on the Exam Content Outline (ECO), which is revised every 4-5 years by PMI. The exam syllabus is divided into three domains: People (42%), Process (50%), and Business Environment (8%) . Prior to January 2021, the exam was based on tasks from five performance domains or process groups, encompassing a total of 49 processes.

PMP certification is applicable to project managers in virtually any industry, including health, construction, information technology (IT), and business. While this type of certification is not mandatory for most occupations and company positions, it is a widely recognized designation that improves credibility and bolsters any resume.
