Polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) is a condition that causes pain, stiffness, and inflammation in the muscles around the shoulders, neck, and hips. It is an inflammatory disorder that affects older adults, typically men and women over age 60. The cause of PMR is uncertain, but it is believed to be an autoimmune disease in which the body’s own immune system attacks healthy tissues. The diagnosis of this condition is reached with medical history, physical exam, and blood work. The main symptom is pain and stiffness, which is worse in the morning and lessens as the day goes on. Steroid medication (corticosteroids) is the preferred treatment for PMR.
