POCSO stands for "Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act" of 2012. It is a comprehensive law designed to protect children from sexual assault, sexual harassment, and pornography while safeguarding the interests of the child at every stage of the judicial process by incorporating child-friendly mechanisms for reporting, recording of evidence, investigation, and speedy trial of offenses through designated Special Courts. The act recognizes various forms of penetration other than penile-vaginal penetration and criminalizes acts of immodesty against children too. POCSO is gender-neutral when it addresses the victims and the accused, and it puts the burden of proof on the accused rather than the victim. The act regards child protection as a collective responsibility and makes the reporting of cases mandatory for every citizen. POCSO provides for child-friendly measures, procedures, and infrastructure to ensure minimum trauma is visited upon the child during the judicial process.
