In the context of safeguarding, "Prevent" refers to a strategy aimed at reducing the threat of terrorism by stopping people from becoming terrorists or supporting terrorism. The Prevent duty requires a wide range of public-facing bodies, including education providers, to help prevent the risk of people becoming terrorists or supporting terrorism. The Prevent strategy is part of an overall counter-terrorism strategy called CONTEST. At the heart of Prevent is safeguarding children and adults and providing early intervention to protect and divert people away from being drawn into terrorist activities. Prevent is also about safeguarding communities from the threat of terrorism by stopping people from supporting it or becoming terrorists themselves. In the context of safeguarding, Prevent involves protecting children and learners from messages of all violent extremism, including those linked to Islamist ideology, Far Right / Neo Nazi / White Supremacist ideology, various paramilitary groups, and others. Providers should consider radicalisation concerns in line with their existing safeguarding processes, skills, and experience, and all staff should look out for concerning changes in behavior and report them to the designated safeguarding lead.
