Quality of life (QOL) is a concept that aims to capture the well-being of an individual or population regarding both positive and negative elements within the entirety of their existence at a specific point in time. The World Health Organization defines QOL as "an individuals perception of their position in life in the context of the culture and value systems in which they live and in relation to their goals, expectations, standards, and concerns". Standard indicators of QOL include wealth, employment, the environment, physical and mental health, education, recreation and leisure time, social belonging, religious beliefs, safety, security, and freedom. Health-related quality of life (HRQL) is the health aspect of QOL that focuses on people's level of ability, daily functioning, and ability to experience a fulfilling life. Examples of factors that can impact a person's HRQL include disease, injury, impairment, health perceptions, health care, and treatments. HRQL research helps people understand how health, disease, and treatment impact QOL, enabling them to make better decisions about their health and live their lives more fully.
