A QR code (short for "quick-response code") is a type of two-dimensional matrix barcode that stores data for a machine to read. It was invented in 1994 by Japanese company Denso Wave for labelling automobile parts. QR codes are capable of storing lots of data and can be read easily by a digital device. They are frequently used to track information about products in a supply chain and are often used in marketing and advertising campaigns. QR codes can be scanned by a smartphone or camera, and the information contained in the QR codes specific arrangement of pixels can be quickly processed, making it a convenient way to store and access data. QR codes can be used to display text to the user, to open a webpage on the users device, to add a vCard contact to the users device, to open a Uniform Resource Identifier (URI), to connect to a wireless network, or to compose an email or text message. QR codes have become common in consumer advertising, and they have played a key role in helping to trace coronavirus exposure and slow the spread of the virus. QR codes are generally very safe and cannot be hacked, but they record the scanning location, time, and operating system used.
