A quote is the repetition of a sentence, phrase, or passage from speech or text that someone has said or written. It is usually enclosed in quotation marks and credited to the original author or speaker. Quotes are used for a variety of reasons, such as to illuminate the meaning or to support the arguments of the work in which it is being quoted, to provide direct information about the work being quoted, to pay homage to the original work or author, to make the user of the quotation seem well-read, and/or to comply with copyright law. In academic writing, quotes should take up no more than 5–10% of the paper, and its important not to overuse them, as the writers own voice should be dominant. When quoting a source, it is essential to include a correctly formatted in-text citation to give credit to the original author.
