RAC stands for Reservation Against Cancellation. It is a type of ticket that can be sold for travel on the Indian Railways, which ensures the possibility of travel in the train but does not guarantee a berth. An RAC ticket holder is allowed to travel in the coach and can share the berth with another RAC ticket holder. If passengers who already have a confirmed ticket do not board before the train departure or get their confirmed ticket cancelled, a berth will be allocated to the ticket who reserves an RAC ticket. An RAC ticket holder is given an empty berth if there are any last-minute cancellations, if any quota remains unsold, or if any confirmed ticket holders are given a free upgrade according to seat availability in upper class. RAC status is of train ticket which means that the ticket can be confirmed only if there is any cancellation from the category of confirmed tickets. If your train ticket is showing RAC as its status (with an RAC status number), you can board the train and occupy the seat allowed, instead of a sleeping berth at night.
