Ramsay Hunt syndrome, also known as herpes zoster oticus, is a rare neurological disorder caused by the reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus, the same virus that causes chickenpox and shingles. It typically affects adults over 60 years of age, but can also occur in children and people with compromised immune systems. The syndrome is characterized by a painful rash around the ear, on the face, or on the mouth, along with facial weakness or paralysis of the facial nerve (facial palsy) on the same side as the affected ear. Other symptoms may include ringing in the ears (tinnitus) and hearing loss. Prompt treatment is important to reduce the risk of complications, which can include permanent facial muscle weakness and deafness. Treatment usually involves antiviral medications and pain management. While there is no known way to prevent Ramsay Hunt syndrome, treating it with medicine soon after symptoms develop can improve recovery.
