Rated R refers to movies that have been given a "restricted" rating by one of the film rating systems, such as the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) film rating system. An R-rated movie is restricted, and under 17 requires accompanying parent or adult guardian. It may contain adult themes, adult activity, hard language, intense or persistent violence, sexually-oriented nudity, drug abuse, or other elements that parents may find inappropriate for children. The R rating is one of several ratings used to help parents determine if the content of a movie is acceptable for viewing by their children.
